If Zgougou is the mascot of Ciné-Tamaris,
the lion of Denfert is the mascot of Paris' 14th arrondissement.
It is a replica of the one
sculpted out of the rock by Bartholdi in Belfort as a tribute
to Colonel Denfert-Rochereau for defending the town.
The copy in Paris is in the middle of a square
once called "Barrière d'Enfer"
and which became Place Denfert-Rochereau.
It has been used as a meeting place,
for festivities,
fairs,
and even as an election bulletin board.
There are few people around you.
I see an encounter.
You're going to meet a young man.
Not very talkative, but attractive.
HELL'S GATE
How long's the visit?
Four...
20 francs' change.
I'm scared of real skulls.
Thank you.
OK, girl, it's lunchtime.
I'll get some sleep.
Dreaming prepares you for clairvoyance.
- Remember that, Clarisse. - Yes, Madame Clara.
OK, in you go.
OK, kid, it's lunchtime. You've got 30 minutes.
Are you new? What's your name?
Lazarus.
Lazarus Combe.
Excuse me.
- A ham and... ...cheese panini.
- Same taste. - Same hours!
And same price: 14 francs!
- Orange juice. - Me too.
- With a... ...straw.
It's like an echo.
Tomorrow, let's try the other side.
Thank you, Madame Clara.
- I can see clearer now. - Thank you, sir.
Thank you.
There you are.
You smoke?
No, if the smoke bothers you...
I like reading too.
Madame Clara says it helps the imagination.
In 1933 there was a questionnaire
on what could be done to the monuments to embellish Paris.
André Breton replied:
"Give the Lion of Belfort a bone to gnaw
and turn it to the west."
What a fine bone!
What bone?
I'm not sure...
- See you tomorrow? - Yes.
Do you think I have a gift?
Sometimes I see things other people don't.
A gift...
With the customers,
you need psychology mostly.
1, 2, 3...
4, 5... I see a lion.
You'll soon get over it.
If a man is fickle, turn the page.
Don't cry, my dear.
But I love him!
Turn the page.
Hey, are you eavesdropping?
She's my apprentice.
I'm sorry. Just forget I'm here.
- What about my love? - He's gone.
Get used to solitude,
perhaps for a long time.
I see a cat.
A cat?
Yes, serenity and caprice.
Aren't I a bit young for serenity?
I hate losing things.
Funny, you running in that suit.
State employees never run usually!
A young person in an old man's suit.
Like my pay, it sucks. It doesn't exist, I don't exist...
See my little eye here? It sees you're troubled.
Stop being silly.
Here goes...
A kiss to kill!
Don't you want to?
I do, but what're you doing with that tie?
I've got to go.
EVERYTHING MUST GO
Excuse me. Is the young man sick?
Which young man?
The one with blonde hair. He's gone.
Just old folks here.
Concentrate.
Try again. Concentrate.
Where do men go when they leave?
Will we ever know when they abandon us?
They must be somewhere. On a station platform
In an English café
Or a Spanish hotel
